FORTNIGHT OVERVIEW
Salome-Shlama
preserving texts leads to Zazai in southwest Syria. Fleeing to marshes.
Colonizing Mars as a fail safe. Purity.
The major focus of this season in the Mandai, not so much the modern
remnant of this group, but the more ancient Naziraya faction. Modern Mandaeans,
reorganized under Ramuia, deviated partially from the earlier Nazoreans.
Our interest is in the deeper roots of this tradition, and in a form of
it that can be pursued without a community. This aspect of Mandaism is
reflected in an ancient Mandaaean oral tradition preserved by Drower -
the Story of Qiqil and the Darwish.
Salome/Shlama
Salome/Shlama (c. 1st century CE), linked to preserving Mandaean texts like Ginza Rba, fled persecution to Syrian marshes. Mandaean deity icons purified Adam and Eve’s creation, maintaining textual purity. Her distinctive role as guardian ensured Mandaean survival.
Zazai
Zazai (c. 2nd century CE), a Mandaean leader in southwest Syria per Qulasta, led marsh communities, symbolizing cosmic retreat. Mandaean seed offerings (lentil, pea) awakened Adakas, seeking purity. His unique marsh colonization paralleled a failsafe ethos.
Mandaeans
Mandaeans, formalized c. 1st–3rd centuries CE, preserved rituals like 60 Pihtas food ceremonies, enlightening humankind via Naziruta. Mandaean feasts reflected Chiah soul unity, maintaining sparse purity. Their distinctive watercentric cosmology resisted assimilation.
