FORTNIGHT OVERVIEW
Zarathustra, Zurvanism
Late Summer - Fortnight 12 (Zephyr+Earth)
Feast/Sep
6: Good thoughts, good words, good deeds of
Zarathustra. Two brothers, dark and light. Ahriman vs Ahura Mazda. (Grape
Harvest)
Zarathustra Magi
Zarathustra (c. 1200–1000 BCE), founder of Zoroastrianism, taught good thoughts, words, and deeds via the Avesta, with Magi as his priestly successors. Manichaean altars and grounding prayers to Ahura Mazda countered Ahriman’s chaos, rooting spirituality in earth. His unique dualism of light versus darkness framed Persian theology.
Zurvanites
Zurvanites, emerging c. 5th century BCE in Achaemenid
Persia, posited Zurvan (Time) as the progenitor of Ahura Mazda and Ahriman,
diverging from orthodox Zoroastrianism. Manichaean prostrations and Sufi
whirling rescued primal man from darkness, grounding redemption in ritual.
Their distinctive
infinitetime cosmology reconciled dualistic tensions.
Zoroastrian Magians
Zoroastrian Magians, formalized under the Sassanid
Empire (224–651 CE), preserved Zarathustra’s teachings, with fire temples
and the Vendidad. Sufi sand purification reflected the Living Spirit’s
rescue, aligning earthly acts with cosmic salvation. Their unique focus
on ritual purity sustained Zoroastrian identity.
